A Japanese Army detachment occupied Hankou for ten and a half years, from January 1912 until July 1922.They unlawfully acquired land to construct a military camp, built a high power radio station without authorization, did their best to promote Japanese power and interests, and strengthened the Japanese Army's spy network in the upper and middle Yangtze region.England, which had the greatest influence along the Yangtze River, supported Japan for its own needs, and was the principal external factor enabling the detachment to act as it wished. The detachment's final withdrawal from Hankou and return to Japan was tied closely to Japan's adjustment of its policies in China in order to mitigate waves of protest by the Chinese people and to avoid containment by England and the United States.Furthermore, the detachment's withdrawal was premised on increasing the Japanese Navy's power on the Yangtze River.
